Mrs Meenakshi is our Tribal Health Worker who was employed after concern about the high incidence of infant and maternal sickness and death. She refers those that need special care to government clinics and has succeeded in reducing the mortality rate to zero.
Specialist Government and NGO staff often hold clinics to identify ailments, offer medicines or refer patients for further treatment.
Mrs Sivagami works with villagers to reintroduce traditional herbal remedies to complement modern medicines. Diets can be very poor as many tribal people have to rely on basic government food rations due to their low income. There is a shortage of outreach health workers and tribal people claim that government medical staff do not understand their needs or culture.
