These products are made using an ancient style called kalamkari by women who use natural dyes to hand-paint or block-print patterns on to cotton fabric. The word is derived from the Persian kalam (pen) and kari (craftmanship), meaning drawing with a pen. Tamwed has supported the training of groups of women in this technique who produce items for us to sell at events and now, via our website. Women are also trained in tailoring and embroidery to enable them to contribute to the family income while working from home or from local centres. The women are paid a fair wage and production is supervised by our partner NGOs in Tamil Nadu. Profits are invested in projects such as the training of volunteer health workers.
