Tamwed’s Kalamkari Products

Kalamari PrintingTamwed supports the training of groups of women in the art of kalamkari – a traditional process with patterns drawn or printed on cloth using natural dyes.

Training sessions take place at a centre near Chennai in Tamil Nadu. The trainer uses a catalogue of designs passed down through generations. Those trained then set up production units in their villages.

The patterns are sketched on to fabric following the designs closely.
Colours are applied using vegetable dyes and the fabric is ready to be turned
into clothes, wall hangings or to decorate cards and other items.

Kalamari PrintingThe women who create the products are paid a fair wage and any profits from sales in the UK contribute towards post-tsunami, health, education and other projects. Tamwed’s project manager in India monitors every step of the process.
