Gawdesy Report Jan 2012

What Have We Been Doing?

For the 12 months to October 2010, our partners have been raising local awareness about the causes and effects of climate change. They have been working with community groups and schools and setting up events to raise awareness - even in the remotest areas.

Various issues came to light including a general lack of knowledge about climate change at a local level and the realisation that caused severe storms and long periods of drought were now part of the annual cycle of weather.

One of the best ways of illustrating what action could be taken was distributing drought-resistant trees by the thousand at events during which the cause and effect of climate change was discussed.

We are following up the year with 4 months of research and activities to establish what practical actions could be taken. Expert advice will be sort, solar energy units will be tested, and different food producing methods trialled.

In February, we will be launching a new programme based on the practical actions that have proven to be the most appropriate. We hope our project will act as a reference for other communities in other parts of India and the world, who are having to find new ways of living with the changing climate.

Please read our report on work over the last year and also look at the short film shot in the Nilgiris last winter.
